Baby Jet Lag: Fixing Sleep Across Time Zones

Illustration of a clock and moon — baby jet lag and time zones

Jet lag with a baby sounds like a punishment. In practice, babies often adjust faster than their parents — their clocks are younger and their sleep pressure is stronger. What they cannot do is read a clock, which means you run the adjustment for them, mostly with light and feeds.

Before you decide to fight it

Rule one: only shift for trips that deserve it. For a stay under three or four days across a big gap, many families keep the baby partly on home time — accepting odd hours — rather than shifting twice in a week. For a week or more, shift fully and shift fast.

The shift, in order of what matters

How long it takes

A workable rule of thumb: about a day per hour of difference at most, and usually less for babies when the light exposure is right. Eastward is harder than westward for them just as for you. By day three of a big shift, most babies are near enough local; parents take longer, which is its own comedy.

The Lightly way

Recreate the sleep cues, not the nursery. The same sleeping bag, the same white-noise app, the same two-book bedtime — that trio fits in any bag and tells the baby “this is night” in any hemisphere. Portable blackout (a travel blind, or the time-honoured foil-and-tape) earns its place for summer destinations; the full checklist of what to bring and skip is in what not to pack.

FAQ

Should I keep my baby awake on the plane to help adjust?

No. Let flight sleep happen — an overtired baby adjusts worse, not better. Do the clock work on the ground with light and feeds.

Do I need to pre-shift the schedule before the trip?

For big eastward jumps, shifting bedtime 20–30 minutes earlier for a few days helps and costs little. For most trips, adjusting on arrival works fine.

My baby was sleeping through and the trip broke it — permanent?

No. Hold the home routine firmly for a few nights after returning and most babies snap back within a week.
